Timex Heart Rate Monitor

Timex heart rate monitorTimex, with a history dating back to the 1850s, is one of the most trusted names for watches. More recently it has been developing a strong reputation for its sports watches and heart rate monitors.

The best way to learn more about these is either at the Timex corporate website or at the Timex Store at, where you can find special offers and promotions, as well as numerous user reviews and information about new products.

According to, the best seller among the large range was - in late-2009 - the Timex T5G971 Unisex Sports Personal Heart Rate Monitor Watch (picture). It was also at the same time the second most popular of all heart rate monitors, behind only the super-popular Omron HR-100C monitor. In February 2009 Consumer Reports named it the best heart rate monitor of several that it had tested.

The T5G971 lets you set target heart rate zones, with an alarm alerting you when you move outside your zone. It also incorporates a work-out review that allows you to check activity time and average and peak heart rates for your training session. It retails for $69.95, but you should easily be able to find it online for under $50.

The device has attracted around 150 user reviews at, a large number for a heart rate monitor, with about 80 per cent of users awarding it four or five stars (out of five). Here is one:

This is my fourth HRM and by far the best. The display is big and very readable even in dim light without using the indiglo. My last two HRMs were the older model Timex Ironman 100 lappers. They became very unreliable even with new batteries. I used to have to use electrode gel just to get them to work at all. This HRM gives me an accurate reading immediately and continues to do so as my heart rate changes during my workout. It works great even without electrode gel.

It doesn't have any fancy features but I don't need them. It does record your time in the zone that you can set and you average and peak heart rates. It also has a recovery time feature that measures how many BPM your HR drops in one minute. The sensor belt will also work with the HR display most treadmills and other indoor machines. This HRM has already improved my training significantly because it is so accurate and responsive. I highly recommend it.

The Ironman series is another highly popular Timex heart rate monitor. Of these, a best seller is the Timex Ironman Road Trainer Heart Rate Monitor.

Outside magazine described this monitor as "killer value" in its Summer 2009 Buyer's Guide, and wrote:

The LCD digits look like they did circa 1981, but the no-nonsense Road Trainer's functions are all 2009. With included heart-rate-monitor strap, it spits out maxes, averages, calories burned, six zones, split times for 50 laps, and so on.
