Omron HJ-112 Premium Pedometer

The Omron HJ-112 pedometer is not simply the most popular pedometer at Amazon.com. It is usually (the figures change hourly) the most popular of all the 700,000 items listed in Health and Personal Care as well as the most popular of all the 750,000 products listed in Sports and Outdoors.

In other words, it is a hugely popular product.

The About website reviewed the Omron HJ-112 pedometer and concluded:

This pedometer has great features for walkers and runners who want to track dedicated walking or running workouts as well as tracking their total daily steps. The aerobic steps function tracks your steps when you walk or run more than 60 steps per minute or continue for 10 minutes or more. The exercise timer continues so long as you don't pause for more than a minute. The regular step counter counts all steps. Other functions include calories, distance, and a 7-day memory. Having the 7-day memory is essential for those who want to track their steps but may not be able to log each day.

What is unique about the Omron HJ-112 is that it has a design that allows you to either wear it on your belt or waistband, or to carry it in a pocket or purse or pack. The unit must remain perpendicular to the ground, but it is forgiving enough to be tilted or slanted, so long as it is not lying on its face or on its back relative to the ground. This is a big plus to those who have difficulty wearing at the waistband - wearing it on your sock or your bra is a possibility.

Walk About magazine reviewed pedometers, and said:

Also rated tops for accuracy, the Omron HJ-112 has an advanced design that is more tolerant of being carried at an angle. Most pedometers are inaccurate unless they can hang straight up and down, but the Omron can be clipped to a pocket or bra and still be accurate. It counts steps, calculates distance, and calories burned. It has a seven-day memory so you don’t have to reset it every day.

Consumer Reports in October 2004 tested 12 pedometers. The Omron HJ-112 was rated the best. (Results available for subscribers only. A brief outline of the report is here.)

According to the Walker Tracker website, the HJ-112 is used by vastly more of its members than any other pedometer.

Omron’s own promotional material for the Omron HJ-112 pedometer says:

Whether patients are newly diagnosed with hypertension, trying to lose weight or just want more energy, physical activity is essential to staying healthy.  Omron’s new product, the HJ-112 Premium Pedometer, has more flexibility in usage than most digital pedometers because it contains two acceleration sensors.  This capability allows the pedometer to count steps at all positions perpendicular to the ground.  As a result, the pedometer can be placed in a pocket as well as clipped on a belt.  This new pedometer also features an aerobic step counter to identify how much of the user’s total daily activity is considered aerobic activity.  It’s easy to use—just set it and get moving.
