Omron HEM-712C Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor

Omron's HEM-712C automatic blood pressure monitor is a slightly modified version of the top-selling HEM-711AC, lacking the latter's AC adaptor and cuff storage and with a smaller memory. A comparison table of the various Omron models is here.

According to the Omron website:

Taking your blood pressure is easy with this fully automatic monitor. Simply wrap the cuff around your arm and press START. In seconds, your blood pressure and pulse readings are shown on the digital display.

The HEM-712C has been tested, evaluated and proven to meet the rigorous safety and accuracy standards set by independent organizations.

The Omron HEM-712C was also rated as the #2 blood pressure monitor by the top independent product-testing laboratory in the U.S.

Automatic blood pressure monitors are affordable, accurate and simple to use. This monitor automatically inflates with the push of a button. And only Omron blood pressure monitors have IntelliSense technology to automatically determine the correct amount of pressure required to quickly and comfortably measure your blood pressure reading. The result is accurate measurements every time.

In June 2003, Consumer Reports magazine featured the result of tests on blood pressure monitors. The report is for subscribers only, but in 2004 the Pharmacist's Letter/Prescriber's Letter published a three-page newssheet "Home Blood Pressure Monitors" (pdf file), for doctors to give to their patients. It included a comparison table of leading models. It said that, among the automatic upper arm wrist units, the Omron HEM-712C was one of those "rated most highly by Consumer Reports".

Unfortunately it is otherwise not easy to find independent reviews of products such as blood pressure monitors. Probably the best source comes from the user reviews at sales site like Amazon.com. Though hardly scientific, these reviews give some excellent insight into how the product actually works in a real-life home environment.

In May 2007 around 40 purchasers had reviewed the HEM-712C at Amazon.com, with an average rating of four-and-a-half stars (out of five). Here are three reviews:

* My doctor recommended I purchase this product and was asked to bring it in to establish its accuracy. He tested it and it passed with flying colors! It was extremely accurate when compared to his office blood pressure unit. I highly recommend this product.

* I have used the Omron HEM-712C Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor for over a month. At first the readings were so inconsistent I thought the unit was faulty. After about a week of use the range of readings got smaller. I believe that having a consistent position of your body and arm plus an accurate positioning of the cuff leads to more consistent results.

* This is a nice compact unit that as far as I am concerned gives a fairly accurate reading. Follow the simple directions and make sure you put the cuff on with the "arrow" facing down your arm and facing up and voila!, blood pressure taken. The unit stores readings, highs and lows, and comes in handy when doing comparisons based on daily or bi-daily exercise routines or for monitoring health issues. I think the only drawback of the unit would be the size of the cuff, it comes with a standard arm size cuff. I would have liked to have seen it just a hair or two bigger as my arm runs 19.25 inches around on the right and my left is 18.75 inches. Other than ordering a larger cuff though I have no complaints. I hope this helps somewhat on your purchasing decision, there are many out there and at a higher price and cheaper ones too, this one just seems to fit the bill for me.
