Is This The Best Pedometer For Running - Garmin Forerunner 305?
I purchased the Omron Digital Pedometer HJ-112 because it was highly rated as an accurate pedometer for running. The distance measurement (which I care about) was consistently inaccurate. I spoke with a rep about the stride issue and the problems with the measurements. I used a 1/4 mi. track at a local private school to repeatedly reset the stride for accuracy, with no success. On July 6, I wore 2 pedometers: my newly repaired Accusplit Eagle 180 (used for 2.5 yrs.)and the Omron, resetting both to "0.00", and running on a measured trail I know well (around a golf course). There was a wide disparity in measurement reporting: Accusplit: 3.77 mi.; Omron: 4.28 mi). The Accusplit is much closer to the true distance. I am returning the Omron for a refund. The Garmin Forerunner 305 uses GPS tracking to measure distance. It is a huge best seller. It is also - compared to regular pedometers - hugely expensive. The list price is $300, although you should be able to find it online for around $170. This is a big discount, but it is still not cheap. Here is a short excerpt from a lengthy Amazon.com review: Just when you thought Garmin had cornered the market on powerful, affordable, and effective wrist-mounted GPS devices, here comes the Forerunner 305. The release of this device is a major achievement from a design and technology perspective. This isn't just marketing-speak; the Forerunner 305 is the most accurate, most reliable wrist-mounted performance and GPS tracking tool we've ever tested. Yes, it's that good. While no device this compact can do everything (yet), the 305 pushes the boundaries of what is possible from something strapped around your wrist. The 305 model includes wireless heartrate monitoring and it can also be connected to Garmin's wireless bicycle speed and cadence sensor. If you don't need these features, consider the lower-priced Forerunner 205. * Get the Latest Price on the Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS Receiver. See also my report Guide to Buying the Best Pedometer.
