Buyers Guide to the Best Humidifiers
Who needs a humidifier? Anyone who has uncomfortably dry or itchy eyes, throat or skin, or whose asthma is a problem indoors during the heating season. In addition to the health benefits, a humidifier can also reduce static electricity, peeling wallpaper, and cracks in paint and furniture. It also gives useful advice on how to choose, including information on noise, operating costs, water quality, cleaning and humidistats. Various types are available, and you should consider which is the best humidifier for you. The cool-mist humidifier is the most popular type. It comprises a wick, or filter, that absorbs water, with a fan that blows air onto the wick to evaporate the water, creating moisture in the air. These models have a low power consumption, but the noise of the fan is a common complaint. The wicks need to be replaced quite often. A warm-mist humidifier boils water, releasing steam into the air. Some models include a kind of medicine cup that allows you to send medicinal vapors into the room. However, this type uses more electricity than cool-mist models, and they can be dangerous, due to the boiling water. They also do not usually have a great range, and are generally for use in small rooms. An ultrasonic humidifier uses a vibrating metal diaphragm to break the water down into a vapor mist. This type is virtually silent and does not need a filter. However, impurities can appear if you do not have a clean source of water. As with warm-mist models, the range is rather limited. An impeller humidifier uses a rotating disc to create tiny water droplets that move into the air. This has the same strengths and disadvantages as ultrasonic models. You have many choices as to the size, from tiny table-top models to whole house units. And if you will be using it a lot, check running costs. As noted, cool-mist humidifiers are much cheaper to run than warm-mist units. Once you start researching the many, many models that are available, you will find that no single device stands out. This website covers many topics - pedometers, blood pressure monitors, heart rate monitors, and more - and generally within each category a few products stand out, recognized by consumers and the media as the leaders in their field. This is not the case with humidifiers. It rated the Honeywell HCM-300T QuietCare 3-Gallon Humidifier Among warm-mist humidifiers it named the Enviracaire EWM-211D Humidifier As its best ultrasonic humidifier, and also named as its "splurge-worthy pick," the magazine selected the Air-O-Swiss AOS 7144 Humidifier.
