It’s enough to get you thinking there’s some kind of conspiracy happening, and inevitably that’s what some people have been thinking.

is the latest scam used to generate profits for pharmaceutical company
insiders.
President George Bush’s suggestion that a bird flu pandemic might make it necessary to call in the military has led to suggestions that he plans martial law. For example, Texas Congressman Ron Paul “has accused the Bush administration of attempting to set in motion a militarized police state in America by enacting gun confiscation martial law provisions in the event of an avian flu pandemic.”

The next "national emergency" -- possibly a flu pandemic -- could be democracy's last hurrah. Bush is already boasting of using the military to "quarantine" those affected. But not all the conspiracies concern George Bush. Here’s one that involves China:
I had an interesting meeting the other day at a coffee shop and talked with a highly paranoid chap, who claimed to have some real insider information. He said that the Chinese were experimenting with their own populations with new vaccines for bird flu. He later said that an experiment with the N5H1 strain in a South Eastern province yielded better than expected results and they were forced to quarantine the area and kill thousands of birds and nearly 200 humans…Interesting how people get carried away, except he sounded legitimate.
